Down Syndrome Awareness Month

If you aren't aware, October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. There are many people who participate in "31 for 21", which means you blog each day of October for Trisomy 21. We did a lousy job, but I wanted to leave you with this poem...

To a Special Spirit

At a council assembled in heaven
Where presided the Great Magistrate,
Came spirits in anticipation,
To make plans for their second estate.

Each was given his own special mission
And talent to use and display.
With joy each received his assignment:
With counsel to keep faith and to pray.

One spirit transcended the others,
Outstanding in talents and grace,
Majestic in stature and bearing
With light in his angelic face.

The Magistrate turned to address him,
Saying, "Your mission is unlike the rest,
For they're going to earth to be tested
But you will be part of the test.

"You'll help sift the hearts of my people,
And will test them for true charity.
What's done to the least of my children,
Is a measure of what's done unto me.

"You'll challenge the faith of your loved ones,
And strangers you meet on life's way.
You will undergo great tribulation
And your spirit will feel deep dismay.

"When your sojourn on earth is completed
And the trial you've gone through is o'er,
Then as humble and pure as you left me,
You'll return to my presence once more."

For a moment the spirit was troubled,
Ere the conflict within him he won.
Then he spoke: "I am ready, Dear Master,
Foy thy will and mot mine shall be done."

Now the time had arrived for departure,
And the spirits were ready to go.
One paused at the throne of his Father
And spoke in a voice sweet and low.

"Take my hand so I won't be afraid, Lord,
For truly I am ready for earth."
So with God's hand in his, he departed
And entered the channel of birth.
