Preston: One Week Old

Preston has amazed us with his progress over the last few days. He is maintaining his temperature and was moved from the incubator to a regular infant bed. He is eating like a champ and has regained his birth weight so they took out his IV yesterday. He's been meeting with just a few of his adoring fans.

The nurse shocked us tonight be telling us that he is doing so well that he might be able to come home this week!! He would be sent home with oxygen but there is not much more they can do for him because he is eating well and gaining weight. Tomorrow I will be spending most of the day at the hospital to see how things go and then I'll be required to spend two nights at the hospital to practice how it will be at home but with the nurses nearby in case I need them. We are excited to be close to having him come home, but he's still so little - it's scary!

Yesterday the doctor met with us and let us know that Preston is an extra-special little guy...one with an extra chromosome. Preston has Down Syndrome. We are saddened by this news but we have so much love to share with him and we are thrilled that God has trusted us to care for one of his precious children. I was reminded of a teaching of the Savior in John chapter 9. "And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him." We know that we will see the works of God through Preston's life and the joy he will bring to us as his family and to those who will know him. Thank you for your continued concern, love and prayers for us. We love you.
